Together, we can tailor the approach to meet your specific requirements, ensuring a prompt and effective commencement of your treatment.
My Professional Journey: Training and Expertise in Healthcare
I embarked on my medical journey at Leeds University Medical School, earning my degree in 2002. My early career as a junior doctor included roles in both general medicine and general surgery in Leeds, followed by practicing Emergency Medicine in the UK and Wellington, New Zealand.
My pursuit of excellence continued with Anaesthetic Training in West Yorkshire. In 2008, I achieved my Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, solidifying my expertise and continuing with the completion of my Anaesthesia training certificate in 2012 followed by proudly being appointed as Consultant Anaesthetist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
My commitment to innovation and teaching led me, and two consultant colleagues, to establish the National Anaesthetic Final Exam Preparation Course, known as ‘Leeds Crammer’. We’ve witnessed tremendous success and demand for this course, further motivating our dedication to education in the field of Anaesthesia.
As the lead clinician for Vascular Access since 2018 and lead for Obstetric Anaesthesia at St. James’ Hospital, I strive for progress and excellence. Notably, I’ve contributed to several healthcare projects in partnership with Leeds University Engineering department, holding multiple patents. I conduct 2-3 operating lists per week within the NHS, focusing on advanced vascular access, as well as 5-6 sessions providing general anaesthesia or sedation for surgeons in colorectal, thoracics, obstetrics, and ophthalmology.
In 2016, I established the Vascular Access Specialist Team, emphasising the importance of education and training for anaesthetists and anaesthetic associates. This team has steadily grown and now inserts over 4000 devices per year. My commitment to advancing healthcare also extends globally, as I’ve trained experienced doctors in vascular access insertions in both South Africa and Germany.
My innovative spirit led to the introduction of ECG-catheter tip location systems at the trust, a pioneering move that transitioned the majority of PICC insertions to a ward-based service, eliminating the need for patient exposure to x-rays.
With over 3000 personal CVAD insertions and experience with every available device, I’ve become a leading expert in the field, and was part of a National Working Group of Anaesthetists writing guidance for Safe Vascular Access.
Since 2018, I’ve been contributing to the Spire Leeds Oncology department, collaborating closely with the nursing team and oncologists to establish a centre of excellence in oncology care across Yorkshire. My journey continues, fueled by a passion for innovation, education, and providing exceptional care.
